Have any of you seen the TV anime series “The Disastrous Life of Saiki K”, which recently finished broadcasting and already has a confirmed sequel? Today I would like to talk about its protagonist, Saiki Kusuo.
When it comes to heroes, most people would probably think of American comic book heroes or of Ultraman, or other such characters. But lately, my favorite heroes are expressionless, slightly unmotivated characters such as Saitama Sensei from “One Punch Man”.
Saiki Kusuo is expressionless and detached, someone who only cares about his own interests. He is not the type of person who is beloved by everyone. And yet, whenever someone around him is in trouble he makes an effort, unreluctantly, to help them out. Moreover, Saiki typically doesn’t take credit for his achievements, instead giving the attention to the other person.
Expressionless people who work without others noticing them are truly kind–. They are not perfect human beings, and that makes them even more charming.
Incidentally, we have a database of over 1,000 heroes from all ages and countries, and when we searched for “cold and unaffected” heroes similar to Saiki we found examples such as Golgo 13 and Black Jack. But they are the kind of heroes who are ultimately looking to benefit from their actions, instead of simply helping others.
This makes me think that Saiki Kusuo is a new type of hero which hasn’t existed before, and this might be why he became so popular.
